Provide incoming generating activities during period of food insecurity
Monga is a seasonal food insecurity in ecologically vulnerable and economically weak parts of north-western Bangladesh, primarily caused by an employment and income deficit before “Aman” is harvested. It mainly affects those rural poor, who have an undiversified income that is directly or indirectly based on agriculture.
Monga grips the northern part of Bangladesh almost every year. In 2005, it was no exception and thousands were affected in the northern Rangpur, Kurigram, Nilphamari, Gaibandha and Lalmonirhat districts. Through field reports from our partner Badhan, SpaandanB verified the situation and assessed the need. Since many of our generous donors expressed an interest to help, we have undertaken a Food for Work program to help affected people.
Our heartfelt thanks to all donors for their generous donations!
SpaanadanB, with the help from our partner organization Badhan has completed the Monga program. Under this program, beneficiaries are engaged in work to raise the foundation level of educational institutes by filling soil. This not only provided earning opportunity to the Monga victims but also protected the school buildings from future flooding. As a part of this program, blankets 200 blankets are also distributed to needy families. Medical assistance were given with the help of some local doctor. Medicine was supplied by Badhan from their own resource. The following table summarizes the activities.
