CDC (Child Development Center) was established in 1993 to help the developmentally disabled children. CDC is one of the firsts such center within a national hospital in Bangladesh, which focuses primarily on disabled children belonging to families of the lower income bracket. At the beginning CDC acted as a liaison between the Shishu (child) Hospital and the neighboring Agargon basti (slum). The major reason for this liaison was under utilization of the Shisu Hospital services by the Arargaon basti due to the negative behavior of hospital staff towards these people. Through the center a community-based program which included regular visits to these households by the social workers and health service providers was established. It also helps establishing a trust between these people and the hospital.
