Bangladesh was hit with devastating cyclone Sidr on November 15, 2007.The cyclone has killed thousands and destroyed homes and livelihood of millions of
families. In this time of crisis, SpaandanB will do everything possible to extend its support to the cyclone victims as we are doing for the victims of 2007 flood and have done in the past for 2004 flood and 1998 flood.
As always, our goal is to maximize
the benefit of the actual victims. Accordingly, SpaandanB
is bearing the expenses for collecting the funds and remitting
them to Bangladesh.
For donors in the United States, your donation to SpaandanB is
fully tax-deductible
to the extent allowable by law.
All of our partners have done the first
round of distribution of emergency relief materials at many
remote localities of the affected region. Based on the funds
that we are sending and committing, many partners are in their
second and third round of operations. SpaandanB President, Iqbal
Yusuf, has arrived Dhaka on December 2nd and is working closely
with SpaandanB Dhaka office, partner organizations, and
SpaandanB US members to ensure that raised funds get utilized
get utilized for the cyclone victims at earliest possible time.
To ensure that the funds are used properly, representatives from
SpaandanB Bangladesh office occasionally accompany the relief teams. The
representatives provide us independent and objective reports on
the relief activities. All our partners are required to cooperate
with the representatives.
Our partner organizations are chosen carefully based on various
criteria, of which the most important are reliability, effectiveness
of the relief efforts and low overhead cost. Based on our experience
during the floods in 2007 and 2004, we are working with the following organizations
on cyclone relief projects:
